Sawyer took a deep breath at her words- he had never been referred to as that before. The closest he had ever heard to that was Mr. Griffiths, which of course, he had left behind in his old life. No one referred to him formally since he joined the Snatchers- even the Ministry had always just called him “Sawyer”. He drummed his fingers on the table as he took another bite of food, shaking his head. “No… no, it’s okay,” he replied, standing- he couldn’t let himself take anything more from this family. He drew out a piece of parchment from his pocket, placing it on the table. He used Snatcher sign to speak to her, knowing the girl wouldn’t understand but Urvi would- It’s the date and place for the burial. I know it would have meant a lot to him if you came. I’m sorry to have bothered. He tried to shut off his emotions, which Scabior had been far better at, but started to turn to leave.

She nodded as he signed the words to her. She wanted to comfort him, but she was worried he wouldn’t react well to it. To some people, a kindness was a trap in a way. Take Jenkens for instance. She had told him he could have his job back, and he had told her that it was because she wanted to control him. Some people didn’t understand kindness. It had taken Scabior some time, but he had understood her kindness….even if it had been wrapped up in madness.

If Sawyer had been feeling bad before considering Scabior’s death, his heart plummeted at Aurora’s words. How dare you, he thought to himself. How dare you sit where he surely sat, millions of times before? Do you think you could possibly REPLACE him? This was the closest thing he ever had to family, and here you sit eating their food and pretending nothing happened when it should have been you that died that night.

Sawyer bit his lip, sighing and nodding to Urvi. He wanted to make some excuse to leave, but nothing came to mind. His fingers gave occasional little twitches, hinting at his nervousness. And what of his child, hm? What about his daughter? What are you going to do, pretend to be her father? No one could ever replace Scabior. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He knew that. He kept trying to remember, and there was nothing about him that was intentionally trying to replace Scabior, ever. But… he had idolized the man, at times. Hell, even had a huge crush on him. So he tried to play it like Scabior, be strong and pretend like it didn’t get to him… when really… He kept his eyes down.

Urvi soothed her child, while she kept an eye on her guest. He looked ready to bolt. He probably wasn’t very comfortable with her. He didn’t know her after all. She didn’t mean to make him feel awkward, but she couldn’t help it. Her baby came first. “Is there anything you need, Mr. Sawyer?” She asked him politely. She wanted to put him back at ease. Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to. So, she was stuck just staring at him.

Sawyer heard the little patter of feet, and turned his head towards the sound. He gave the little girl a warm smile, but didn’t bother to introduce himself- despite Urvi’s hospitality, he still didn’t quite know if he was welcomed, particularly considering he had been a Snatcher (and still was on the run with them). He took another bite, muttering quietly, “It will be. The Death Eaters will be rounded up, as will the Snatchers. The world will be a better place for everyone else.” His words were near-inaudible. It kind of sucked, having to go from being a Mudblood on the run to being a Snatcher on the run.

Urvi picked up the little girl and gave her a cup of warmed milk as she peered sleepily over at the man who was trying to be inconspicuous. “Mummy, that no Uncle Tock Tock.” Urvi looked at her daughter and hugged her close. “I know, darling. I know.” She looked up at the Snatcher, willing him to understand. Aurora was at a fragile age where hadn’t been able to grasp Scabior’s death. She still thought he was coming back. And it was hard for Urvi to pretend otherwise.

Sawyer felt a bit of his weight lift as the smell of the food hit his nostrils- it seemed wonderful. Still, his ears pricked at the mention of kids. “Well, at least the worst of it’s over for you,” he commented, taking a slow bite. His taste buds seemed to explode with flavour, more than he’d tasted in a year. Somewhere, his flabbergasted mind forgot that he had to pretend like he hadn’t been raised in a Muggle house. “God, that’s good.” The sentence flowed out before he could stop it, but he didn’t even seem to catch his mistake. “But anyways- I’m sure it’ll all clear up soon.”

She laughed at his obvious appreciation of her food. She leaned against the counter as he ate. He’d given himself away. She knew just where he had grown up if not who his parents were. No wizard who had been a wizard his entire life said God. She smiled again. “I sure hope so.” The pitter patter of small feet was heard right before Aurora stumbled into the kitchen.

Sawyer smiled back, nodding. “Well, it’s nice ta meet you for real, Ms. Patil,” he greeted, tracing small patterns on the counter. “And it’s lucky for me that’s your job. Been struggling on that for awhile now.” Could have been a  lot worse, though. He bit his lip, refusing to think about that aspect of it. “But you were right to threaten me… it’s gotten kinda nasty out there.”

“It’s nice to meet you as well. I love my job and so it’s nice to be helpful. I’m glad that I was able to help you.” She smiled as she handed him the plate of warm food. “It’s awful out there. I can’t even let the children go to their respective schools or daycares.”

Sawyer let out a sigh as his ankle was healed, a smile of relief spreading across his face. “Thank you,” he said softly. “That feels a lot better… And I just realized,” he started, looking up slowly. “You have no idea who I am. Excuse me for my rudeness- my name is Sawyer. Jerome Sawyer. I’m sorry we had to meet under such unfortunate circumstances, but I worked very closely with Antioch.” He nodded slowly.

“You’re very welcome. It’s sort of what I do.” She smiled sweetly as she started heating the food up for him. It gave her hands something to do. “It’s alright. I’ve threatened you all evening. We’re about even.” She smiled as she listened to his explanation. “I see. Well I am Urvi Patil, as you know. I’m the Head Healer for adaptive problems at St. Mungo’s.”

Sawyer sighed- dammit. She was good. “I’m not sick,” he muttered softly, looking down and studying the surface of the table as though it held the meaning to life itself. “If that’s what you’re askin’. Just stress, I s’pose.” The reason he was throwing up was not because he was sick. It was because often, when he closed his eyes, the first thing he would see was Scabior bleeding out in front of him, throat torn and gasping to tell his last precious few words to Sawyer. It was enough to make anyone throw up.

“I… I’d appreciate a Healing, though, if you are willing to give it.” Slowly, he rolled his ankle, trying not to wince at the pain. It had gotten a bit sprained in the fall, and though weeks had passed, it was still swelling profusely.

“I’m sure you’re not.” She said in an even voice. She trusted her ability to tell when someone was lying to her and this was not one of those times. He was telling her the truth, so she let it go. He seemed to be haunted by something. and she had enough skeletons in her closet to know when to let things go. “I’ll be more than happy to provide a Healing.” She smiled and took out her wand. She said the spells she needed to and shortly, he was as good as knew.

Sawyer’s face was coloured red as he was beaten at his own façade, and he followed her rather sheepishly, taking a seat at her table as she fixed him a plate. “Th-thank you for your hospitality,” he muttered with a bit of a sigh. “It means a lot to me.”

Against himself, he gave her a little smile. Even with the scar, it seemed to warm up the contours of his face, make him seem just that much friendlier. He knew, however, he might not be able to keep this meal down. He had been having rather extreme amounts of nausea, due to trauma and overall shock. He had also been having more panic attacks, but he managed to keep himself composed most of the time. One needed a good poker face as a Snatcher.

“Are you alright? You look slightly queasy.” She had caught it out of the corner of her eye as she turned before he smoothed his expression out. She was sure that he was probably quite sick, but he didn’t want her to know. Well bully for him. She wasn’t going to feed him if he was just going to throw it all back up.

“I’m a Healer. If you’ll let me fix you up, I’d be thankful. I even promise to just use my wand.” The words were out before she could stop them. That’s what she told Scabior when he was injured. She would always use her gift and not her magic.

Sawyer nodded, looking down. He didn’t think it wise to mention he had been Scabior’s Snatcher confidant… telling him everything he was afraid for other people to know. Almost everything. He highly doubted anyone knew everything, including Solara. “He was secretive,” he muttered softly. “I… I’m sorry for your loss.” He didn’t know why, but he felt it necessary to say that- probably for the reason that Scabior had so often described this woman as his family.

“If my presence upsets you,” he began slowly, shutting his eyes with a sigh. “Then I’ll remove myself. You don’t need to go to the trouble.” Still, his stomach gave a telltale growl at the mention of food.

“Don’t worry about it.” Her default answer when someone tried to console her. She was supposed to be the strong pillar in her family. No one needed to know how deep her hurt ran. So, she hid it behind a seamless smile.

“I can here your stomach growling. Come with me, it’s certainly no trouble on my part. I live to feat the masses. Ask around.” She said leading him to the kitchen. There was still roasted chicken left over from the dinner as well as green beans and mashed potatoes. She fixed him a plate.

Sawyer nodded, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his wand- slowly, as she had asked. “Tergeo,” he muttered, the wand siphoning away all the rainwater from his tall, gangly form. He blinked, though, doing a double-take once he saw the woman in the light. “You’re… I remember you,” he said slowly. The memory was faint, one Snatch amongst hundreds, but he dredged it up- Scabior pinning her down to the ground, telling him to check for her name, and then Scabior had convinced the others to go, that she was his…

He hadn’t made the connection until now. Urvi Patil. Of course. “Scabior Snatched you… A long time ago. I was there.” He feared she wouldn’t recognize him with the scar, and he wanted to cast his illusionment charm, cover it, but he had told her that he would only siphon away the rainwater. He didn’t wish to take his chances any further.

These words solidified his claim to being one of her best friend’s Snatchers. This didn’t mean that he was safe. She looked at him closer. He looked vaguely familiar. “You didn’t have the scar then, did you? And you look more haggard now.”

She lowered her wand slowly as she watched him. Her position was deceptively relaxed. These past few weeks had honed her reflexes and it would be a cold day in hell when someone caught her unawares again.

“The war,” was all he could say for an answer. He slowly lowered his hands, slipping both the wand and the bandanna into his pocket. He cleared his throat, trying again to speak- “We lost hundreds, including both our leaders, and the survivors all were badly injured either in the fall or the explosion.” He kept his face blank, slightly stern, his posture rigid and at attention. He remembered blacking out right after the bridge had blown, even before he hit the bottom of the gorge. He was one of the lucky ones.

“We’ve been on the run. Fifteen of us. Figures we’d look haggard. All I know is Antioch- erm, I mean, Sebastian told me to deliver the message to you. He said you and he were quite close.” The stumble over Scabior’s name was still an issue for him- it was difficult to adapt to a change he had requested upon his deathbed. “He never mentioned sending you anything.”

She sat down with a slight sigh. It had been hard on the children. Explaining to them that their favourite uncle wasn’t coming back had been a hard lesson in parenting. Arian had nightmares still about the news and Aurora wasn’t sleeping well either. Such was life, she supposed. Losses were meant to be remembered and dealt with. There was no such thing as a mourning period. Not for any of them.

“He wouldn’t. He was secretive. Especially where w-I am concerned.” She didn’t want to tell this man about the children that were sleeping fitfully upstairs. He didn’t need to know her weaknesses, and she was not inclined to share them. “I’m sorry that you came all this way for nothing. I can get you something to eat?” She remembered how much Scabior had enjoyed her cooking, and she felt her heart constrict.
